The samurai warrior of feudal Japan is an enduring symbol of principled, self-reliant, stand-alone personal responsibility and accountability. Masters of Ch'an, Zen, and the Stoics of ancient Greece also epitomize principled, self-reliant, stand-alone personal responsibility and accountability. To avoid the erosive irresponsibility, social fragmentation, and loss of virtue pervading the world in these last years of the 20th century, surviving cultures of the 21st century and beyond would do well to carefully instill a principled, self-reliant, stand-alone personal responsibility and accountability in each individual. |
